Daniel Haile was Tillery’s hero as he kept a cool head to land a penalty a minute from time to clinch a deserved win for his team. The youngster replaced Darren Miles half way through the first half and amassed 22 points including a try and that last-minute penalty.

After a somewhat rocky start, Tillery assumed control of the game through the pack and looked on course for a comfortable victory at 24 -12 up. But the battling Ironsides, who fully merited the two bonus points they accrued, showed their mettle as they took advantage of Tillery’s defensive lapses to level the game before Haile’s late kick settled matters.

The home side started in fine style with a series of wide attacks and they went deservedly in front when burly No. 8 Harries crashed through several tackles to score an unconverted try after 14 minutes. They might have added to their score minutes later but the penalty kick attempt was pushed to the right of the posts.

At last Tillery awoke from their early slumbers with some determined counterattacking but Miles was forced to retire with a rib injury. The introduction of Haile meant the Tillery backs had to reorganise with Craig Edwards moving to centre and Jamie Davies to full back. Haile immediately made an impact as he was on hand to finish off a marvellous piece of interplay between Greg Thomas, Anton Wells, and Aled Penn before adding the conversation in front of the posts.

Tillery were now in full flow. Haile kicked a long range penalty goal before Aled Penn was set free by Jamie Davies to outpace the covering defence for a try in the corner.

The home side responded immediately as centre Jones raced through for a converted try. But Tillery finished the half the stronger and Haile added a second penalty and then was only just denied a try as he followed a grubber kick, the referee deciding that the ball had been minored by a defender.

H-T: 12 – 18

Tillery started the second period as they had finished the first, well on top, and Haile made the home side pay for their indiscretions with two further penalties. Kyle Griffiths went close to grabbing a third try for Tillery but the Ironsides fought back as Harries scored his second of the game.

Still the visitors dominated and might have scored a try when a kick through almost found the awaiting hands of Penn and Davies deep in the home 22. Instead, the Ironsides latched onto the loose ball and a sweeping counterattack saw them score a try to level matters, the conversion hitting the upright.

There was no nothing between the sides on the scoreboard although Tillery continued to enjoy the upper hand in play. With a minute remaining the hosts tried to run deep from their 22 and killed the ball when they failed to break free from the oncoming tacklers. Up stepped Haile and he made no mistake to rifle the ball through the middle of the posts.

There was still time left for a last ditch attempt by the Ironsides to snatch at least a draw but Tillery remained calm and collected to secure the win their efforts warranted.
