Division Three East

The breathtaking brilliance of Darren Miles’ try was the undoubted highlight of this bonus point performance with four tremendous tries forging a vital victory over the Ironsides. In addition to scoring one of the best individual efforts seen at the Park for some time, Miles also set up a brace of tries for Ashley Bayliss with his scything runs.

Second row Adam Morgan showed he is no slouch either as he galloped away for a 55-metre solo try. Those tries aside, this was a great team effort, especially up front where abrasive No. 8 Jon Price was in outstanding form taking the game to the opposition time and again.

Ironsides missed an early penalty kick and Tillery took the lead in the seventh minute when Jamie Davies gathered a loose kick and sparked a counter attack. Quickly recycled ball gave Miles half a gap and he feinted before racing through it. With the full back coming across, Miles committed him before feeding Bayliss in support on his left for a great try converted by Davies.

A brief dust-up from the restart perhaps emphasised the importance both sides placed on the game after poor starts to the season, but it was played in a great spirit throughout overseen by good refereeing. Aled Penn threatened with a neat chip and chase but the Ironsides broke away and their pack exerted some pressure on the home scrum, Price coming to the rescue by picking up.

It was then that Miles conjured up some magic with a truly great try. Gathering the ball on half-way he was confronted by a swathe of Ironsides’ defenders. With no way through, he set out on a wide arcing run back across field before suddenly swooping inside and jinking past several opponents into the clear. There was little room to beat the encroaching full back near the 22 but after a slight hitch kick, he audaciously went on the outside of his man beating him for speed and crossing for a magnificent score that brought the crowd to its feet.

Davies narrowly failed with the conversion but Tillery were now for the first time this season in full flow and with Ross Paul and Gareth Edwards distributing well-won ball neatly, breaks by Craig Edwards and Jamie Davies threatened further touchdowns. Instead the home side had to be content with a Davies penalty before the game entered a scrappy phase, Ironsides missing a second penalty effort just prior to the interval

The visitors changed tack after the break, their forwards keeping the ball tight and it paid dividends as Southall at last found his range with a successful penalty kick.

The hosts were struggling to regain their first half fluency and were grateful when the ball went loose just inside their half. The hard-working Adam Morgan gathered well and burst through with an impressive turn of speed. With no support, he looked around in vain before deciding to try to outstrip the chasing defenders, which he did with ease for an excellent score.

Despite the setback, Ironsides continued to press, Monaghan almost piercing the home ranks behind. Eventually a try did come their way through a forwards’ drive in the corner as Tillery were reduced to 14 men when Dan Meredith was pinged for killing the ball. Harris’ try was well converted from the touchline and there was still all to play for.

Once again, Miles came to the fore as he raced out of his own 22. Splitting the visiting defence with twists and turns, he once again set up Bayliss in good support on the opposition 10 metre line and the centre raced clear for his second try to secure the bonus point.

To their immense credit, the Ironsides struck back as Hallett crossed but Tillery remained ruthlessly resolute to deny them a further score and a losing bonus point.
