TILLERY OUTMUSCLED
Abertillery BG
(3)
3 Rhymney
(8)
18
As always, a very youthful
Tillery side gave a big-hearted display full of courage
and commitment. But not for the first time this season
they came across a bigger, bulkier, more experienced side,
epitomised by visiting veteran No. 8 Stuart Jarman, and
found themselves outmuscled as they went down to defeat.
To their credit, Rhymney put in a performance that belied
their equally lowly position before the game and played
some excellent powerful rugby that will surely see them
climb the table.
Tillery started brightly and
Chris Stevens showed how quickly he is maturing at this
level when he capitalised on early pressure to drop a goal
for the lead, though the the kick itself fortuitously took
a deflection to help it on its way over. From that point
onwards though, the Brewers established and maintained the
upper hand through a direct game dependent on the running
of their big forwards and burly inside centre Dai Davies.
They levelled the scores
with a Chris Thew penalty and then second row Ryan Hill
went over from close range for an unconverted to take the
lead. Despite being outgunned in the physical exchanges,
Tillery continued to take the game to their opponents with
Greg Lane and Jonathan Price in particular prominent,
although it took a magnificent last-ditch tackle by Darren
Miles to stop a second Rhymney try.
H-T: 3 - 8
After the break Rhymney
continued to dominate and Tillery were handicapped by the
strong wind now blowing in their faces, which made
clearance kicks difficult.
The visitors were unable to
extend their lead until mid way through the half with a
second Thew penalty as Tillery displayed their usual
never-say-die attitude in all aspects of play. Lane again
proved a thorn in the Brewers side as he battled
relentlessly and broke away with two fantastic breaks to
give his side attacking positions.
The hosts were unable though
to get a score to put them in contention for the win or a
bonus point and the game finished in a fashion that
reflected much of the previous minutes action as Jarman
powered over from the base of the scrum for a try right at
the death superbly converted by the lively Thew.
