LEADERS TOO STRONG FOR
BRAVE TILLERY
Abertillery BG

When Tillery's Nicky Stevens
went over for try early in the second half to regain the
lead, it seemed as if the Green & Whites might upset the
unbeaten league leaders. But the Unicorns showed precisely
why they have enjoyed such a good start to the season as
they responded to wrest back the upper hand and finish the
stronger side to deny a brave Tillery a bonus point.
Glorious warm sunshine
greeted the sides and both showed a refreshing willingness
to run with the ball from the off. Despite that, good
defences ensured the opening 40 minutes was a low scoring
affair. Home full-back Chris Stevens demonstrated exciting
derring-do under the high ball and caused consternation in
the visitors' ranks with his counter-attacking. The
Unicorns had their own pocket dynamo in the shape of
impressive scrum-half Steve Parry who utilised the ball
provided by his pack to keep the Tillery fringe defence
honest.
The only try of the half came as Nelson
wing Maybank benefited from a lovely flick pass to
outflank the Tillery cover for an unconverted try. A
lovely Chris Stevens chip nearly put Penn in for a home
touchdown but the Green & Whites did get on the scoreboard
with a Stevens penalty and the young full back repeated
the trick to give his team a one-point lead.
It was Nelson though who went into the
break in front as Emanuelli with a penalty minutes before
the break.
H-T: 6 - 8
The Green & Whites started
the second half in breezy style and some lovely handling
triggered by Darren Miles saw Nicky Stevens break free to
race inside the covering full back for a great try.
Agonisingly, Chris Stevens' conversion went just wide.
Tillery continued to have
the better of exchanges but couldn't add to their lead.
With eighteen minutes remaining, replacement forward Steve
Meyrick crashed over for a converted try to give Nelson
the lead and from that point forward the Unicorns kept a
firm grip on the lead.
They extended the lead as
Parry took advantage of a depleted Tillery side, for whom
Joe Rossiter had been yellow carded, to race over and the
Unicorns were unlucky not to have gained a fourth try that
would have gained them a bonus point as they called back
for a forward pass.
