A rapid-fire two-try burst by the Green & Whites just before the interval
was the turning point of this
game,
overcoming
a 13 point deficit and providing the platform for a
fifth consecutive league win
that maintains their momentum for a promotion
challenge. The only
disappointment was that Tillery failed to gain a
fourth try and a bonus point
after the break
following Lee Meredith's try.
Machen were the quicker out of
the blocks and a very early penalty gave them the
lead, which they doubled on nineteen minutes when
former Green & Whites player, outside half Hywel
Davies slotted his second penalty kick.
Much of the play up to this point
had been nondescript, the sticky pitch not helping
the cause of either side. And so it continued before
Machen extended their lead with the first real
concerted piece of handling play in the match. A
neat move down the left put them in a good field
position and when Tillery failed to clear their
lines, the home left wing drifted cleverly infield to burst
through the Tillery defence and cross under the
posts for a converted try.
With time ebbing away before the
interval, Tillery at last lifted the pace and a great
counterattack sparked by Miles and Lee Meredith finished
with some neat handling that put lock Adam Morgan over
for a try, which was well converted by Chris Stevens.
Immediately from the restart, Tillery
rocked Machen again as they launched another incisive
attack. Morgan and Brake were prominent after Chris
Stevens had breached the home flank with a darting run
and as the ball was spun wide right, David Rossiter was
on hand to race over in almost exactly the same spot as
Morgan's try, Stevens again converting superbly.
H-T: 13 - 14
Tillery were now in a more confident mood and after the
break held the aces in most departments. They
couldn't however break down Machen's dogged defence
until the hour mark when Lee Meredith peeled away on
the blind side from an attacking scrum to dive
over for an unconverted try.
Machen struck back extremely quickly with a third Davies'
penalty, but
soon after the outside half overhit a penalty kick to the corner
which wasted a great attacking
position and, with that, Machen's very brief resurgence waned.
From thereon in, the Green & Whites maintained a
vice-like grip on field position and possession and it was
largely a matter of whether they could score a
fourth try for the bonus point. They went close
several times with Craig Meredith coming closest, crossing
the line before rightly being recalled by the
referee for a double movement (below).

In the dying seconds, Machen launched a final
desperate assault from deep in their half but although their
outside centre made some headway, Tillery were able
to keep the home side at bay and hold out for a
well-deserved win.
