10-TRY TILLERY
RUN
RIOT
Abertillery BG (23) 72 Chepstow (0) 0

This 10-try demolition of Chepstow ended a
tremendous eight-day spell for the Green & Whites
and their promotion challenge - three bonus point
wins, twenty-one tries and and 154 points amassed
with only 19 against.
No-one will be getting carried away though as the
race to go up still looks like going down to the
wire with Risca and Talywain and both of those and
the other opponents will provide sterner battles in
the weeks ahead.
The game went ahead after two
morning inspections with the pitch just about
playable it seemed to look at. The decision was
entirely justified as Tillery played some superb
running and handling rugby making light of the
difficult conditions underfoot.
After an Andrew Mason chargedown gave Tillery some
excellent early field position, Chepstow responded
well and just failed to get an early lead when a
penalty went wide and a dropped goal attempt fell
just short. Chris Stevens then put the hosts in
front with a penalty before Darren Miles made a
great tackle on the visitors' loose head prop to
stop a try.
Immediately Tillery extended the lead as Joe
Rossiter barged his way towards the line for Lewis
Elliott to finish off with a storming charge.
Stevens failed to add the extra points but slotted a
penalty to extend the home advantage to 11-nil.
With a good stream of ball the home backs were now
starting to stretch the visitors defence, Craig
Edwards' delightful distribution putting Stevens
into a gap to feed to Miles who cantered over for a
converted touchdown.

Then, just before the interval
Craig Meredith burst through a stack of home
defenders for a third try (above).
H-T: 23 -0
The opening ten minutes for the second half saw
stout and brave defence from the borders' side and
it appeared that Tillery would be made to battle
hard for a fourth, bonus point try.
But the batch of pack replacements added impetus to
the home effort and one of them Adam Morgan
benefitted as another, Lee Meredith combined neatly
with Jonathan Brake in midfield to create space for
the young lock to race through the gap.
After that the game became somewhat of a procession
despite Chepstow's continued hard efforts as the
Green & Whites played some scintillating rugby to add
another six tries.
The effervescent Luke Pegler crossed twice as did
Aled Penn, one of whose tries resulted from a
sublime combination of backs and forwards as Craig
Edwards timed a pass to perfection to create the
initial space.
Miles dummied beautifully to gather his second of
the game before the hard-working Andrew Mason
brought the game to an end with another try
emanating from a great build up.
