TILLERY DIG DEEP FOR VITAL VICTORY
Abertillery BG (3) 12 Abercarn (7) 7

Depleted by injuries and illness, Tillery had to dig deep on a filthy dark, dank night to recover from a very jittery start and gain a vital victory in their promotion push.

As in the previous outing against St. Joseph's, the home side was very slow to get out of the blocks and Abercarn capitalised with their forwards causing Tillery discomfort in both the tight and loose. Indeed, the Green & Whites were hugely indebted to Darren Miles who twice pulled off try-saving tackles in the opening ten minutes.

Having kept their line intact, at last the hosts seemed to get grips both with their opponents and literally with the wet slippery playing surface. But a defensive slip in midfield allowed the visitors' full back Jason Evans to score a good try, well converted by himself.

Tillery needed a riposte and got it as Chris Stevens landed a wonderful penalty goal from 45 metres although Abercarn might have re-established their seven point advantage moments later when Tillery transgressed, Evans' penalty just falling short.

H-T: 3 -7

Tony Jayne replaced Joey Rossiter early in the second half and a Tillery scrum forced a penalty. Stevens found good field position and Tillery were denied a possible try by a tackle off the ball as Luke Pegler took a quick line out. Stevens however ensured the offence was punished with another excellent penalty kick.

Rossiter then returned for Jayne and the Tillery scrum now continued to dominate in contrast to the first half as the hosts enjoyed the bulk of territory and possession.

However, it was Abercarn who nearly stretched their very narrow lead with a dropped goal attempt before Stevens nudged his team in front for the first time with yet another brilliantly-struck penalty.

With eight minutes remaining Stevens punished Abercarn again with a further penalty to make it 12-7 as Tillery were now very much on top and the home side were able see out the game without any major scares for a vital win.
