Tillery arrived in Newport on the back of a four-match unbeaten streak with three successive wins, but any hopes of extending that were quickly put to rest by a slow start, the loss of prop Dan Meredith in the opening two minutes, and a three-try opening salvo by a determined, hard-running home side within the first quarter hour.

The Green and Whites steadied the ship after that, but they were then playing catch up against the unbeaten league leaders whose kicking game and offloading and support work were superior on the day.

Harriers kicked themselves into very good field position right from the off and Tillery had to rearrange up front after Dan Meredith suffered a knee injury in the opening exchanges, Luke Berry moving to the front row from the flank and Dai Rossiter taking his place. Pill took advantage of the disruption as they wheeled a scrum creating space for rangy wing Dwayne Bailey to sprint over for a try he converted himself from the touchline.

Five minutes later, they extended the lead when the referee allowed a line out to be played despite Tillery being reduced to 13 men with Crandon receiving treatment and Berry having to change footwear to adapt to his new position. The home side won the set piece and a nice drive through the depleted Tillery pack sent their number eight over for an unconverted try.

The restart failed to go ten metres and Pill worked the ball well from the scrum to score almost immediately through Bailey to stretch their lead to 19 nil.

Aled Penn at last put Tillery onto the offensive with a weaving run and the game became a more evenly contested affair, but the hosts dispelled any danger from Tillery attacks with an astute kicking game using the wind to push their opponents back deep into their own half.

H-T: 19-0

The Green & Whites needed a good start to the second period if they were to salvage anything from the afternoon and they pressed hard early on. However, it was Pill who got the all important first score of the half that effectively settled matters.

A great break out from defence with some impressive support work saw them camped close to the Tillery line although the try itself when it came was somewhat fortuitous as a chip from their outside half was charged down by Edwards only to go straight into the welcome arms of the Harriers’ outside centre who strolled over under the posts.

Tillery responded with some concerted pressure and they went close on several occasions to opening their account as the home No. 8  was dispatched to the bin following a series of breakdown offences. Once again though it was Pill that managed to score with another excellent break by their pivot setting up the play for an unconverted try.

Tillery continued to dominate territory, but the attacks lacked real penetration and the hosts had the last word when a clearance kick by Tillery evaded every chasing Green and Whites player for Bailey to latch onto and race through unopposed for a try under the posts he again converted.

Whilst the final score exaggerated the difference between the teams, Pill were full value for their comfortable win and showed why they sit at the top of the table. Tillery once again made things difficult with a slow start and hopefully the largely young Green & Whites side will learn the lessons provided by the hosts in terms of playing territory and the impressive support work.
