What a win and what a performance. Smashed 38-0 in the league at Pill a few months back, Tillery totally turned the tables on Harriers to march triumphantly into the last 16 of the WRU Plate, the ecstatic cheers from players and supporters alike at the end celebrating the Green & Whites’ most complete display for a few years. As expected, Pill were as committed and physical as ever. But Tillery more than matched them in these aspects and outthought, outfought and, by the end, outran their shell-shocked hosts with five tries, the rapid-fire brace from Miles late on being absolute gems.

Perhaps Pill sensed it wasn’t to be their day when their kick off failed to make the mandatory 10 metres.  At the resulting scrum, the Tillery eight asserted their presence immediately setting in motion a sweeping set of phases with quick ruck ball and slick passing at pace to threaten the home line. Pill managed to relieve the pressure with a penalty but they were unable to prevent Tillery taking the lead moments later when from a scrum against the head, Chris Stevens made a lovely break to send wing Jason Thomas in for a score tight in the corner.

Tillery continued to press from the restart and although a series of loose kicks temporarily disrupted their momentum allowing Pill at last to get something of a foothold in the game, the Green & Whites raised their game again, the forwards dominating the physical exchanges in the tight and loose. A great drive by the pack forced Pill transgress and a darting run from Aled Penn put Greg Lane over in the corner. The lock was unable to ground the ball properly though and allowed his disappointment to spill over with some backchat that resulted in a yellow card.

The visitors were in no mood to be denied though and although the impressive Daniel Crandon was forced to leave the field temporarily further disrupted the pack, they doubled the lead when Darren Miles baffled the home side with an arcing run before feeding Justin Phelps. The flanker’s flick pass created space for Kyle Griffiths and the young powerful No. 8 burst over from 15 metres out with a bullocking run taking out several home defenders.

H-T: 0-10

Having been very much second best in the opening forty minutes, the hosts appeared to strengthen their resolve on the resumption and were rewarded by an early unconverted try  as at last they managed to string together some concerted phases of play.

But any home hopes of overhauling Tillery were snuffed out rapidly when Aled Penn crossed for a great try after Jason Thomas and Miles combined wonderfully on half way to send the wing away. Haile added the extras and minutes later stretched the lead to more than two scores with a well-struck penalty after Crandon forced the home fullback to hold on following a clever grubber kick by Craig Edwards.

With that, the home side appeared to wilt as a confident Tillery team took total control of the game. Penn went close to adding a second with another excellent run before playing a major part in his side’s magnificent fourth try. Crandon won quick line out ball and as the ball was moved slickly away, Penn came into midfield. He beat two men with a feint and a third with a powerful hand-off just delightfully delaying his pass outside to Miles, who held up the defenders with a shimmy before slicing clean through and racing over from 30 metres.

If that try was superb, the next was arguably even better. Tillery won the restart and the ball was whipped out to Penn just inside his 10 metre line. He found Chris Stevens who burned off three defenders on the outside before passing to Penn again on the inside and he fed the scoring pass to the supporting Miles.

Penn nearly added a second of his own just before the final whistle but the referee adjudged a marginal forward pass. So Tillery go through to the await the draw whilst Pill will no doubt be plotting revenge in the league fixture between sides at Abertillery in two weeks time.
