12th January 2009:
Abertillery's Division 3 East league campaign has received a
very welcome new year boost with three signings to bolster the
squad. In the pack, Craig Meredith returns from Blaina having
joined the Lambs at the start of the season. A very influential
figure in the successive promotions achieved by Tillery in the
last two seasons, Meredith will provide additional steel to the
Green & Whites' pack.
Behind the scrum another former Green & White returns in the
shape of experienced and speedy wing, Damien Attwell who rejoins
from Brynithel. The third signing also boosts the backs as
another talented youngster, Ashley Parfitt, who starred for
Abertillery Youth, joins his peers such as Nicky and Chris
Stevens. Parfitt has decided to return to rugby having played
football this season to date.
All three signings will be
welcomed by all at the club and will put everyone in good heart
for rest of the league campaign, which still has almost
two-thirds of the games remaining.

December 2008:
Abertillery's
scheduled league match on the 27th December against Newport HSOB
has been postponed until 11th February, they will however be
playing a friendly fixture against Abercarn at the park on
Monday 29th December kick-off 3pm.
Blaina ran out winners yesterday
21-13 at home to Denbigh in SWALEC plate to set up a third round
tie against the 'Green & Whites'. We wait to see if we're home
or away.
29th
November 2008:
Club secretary David Mason has made the following announcement
following the departure of forwards coach Mike James: "I am
pleased to announce the appointment of Matthew Griffin as
Abertillery BG's new forwards coach. As many will know Matthew
is a local lad who progressed through the ranks and played one
season for the seniors before moving to Cardiff RFC. Matthew has
also played for Newbridge and Ebbw Vale to whom he is still
contracted as a player.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish Mike James all the
best and thank him for all his efforts over the years in
ensuring that Abertillery RFC have a future. Mike is still
involved with the club as Chairman of the mini and junior
sections for whom he also does outstanding work."
7 November
2008:
Mike's funeral took place at 11am Friday at
St Michaels Church with his burial (in an Abertillery tie) at Brynithel cemetery
afterwards. In a moving service at a packed church, club
chairman Martyn Edwards spoke affectionately about Mike, and the
high esteem he was held in was apparent by the sheer number of
people present including members of other rugby clubs across
Gwent and south Wales.
1 November
2008:
It is with great regret
that the club announces that life member and former committee
man Mike Brewer passed away on 31st October 2008.
Mike was almost certainly the longest
serving committee man in Abertillery's 125 year history having
been on the club's committee since the mid-1960s. He stepped
down a couple of seasons back and was honoured by the club for
his service by the award of life membership.
Small in stature but very big in heart,
Mike was liked and respected by all and when the
club travelled around the grounds of Welsh rugby, there was
always someone who knew Mike and he could be seen in animated
conversation with them, more often than not laughing aloud, a
sign of his infectious humour.
The club sends its condolences and sympathy
to Val and the family at this sad time.
There will be a minute's silence before the
game against Rhymney as a mark of respect and in memory of Mike
Brewer, a man who was Green & White through and through.
Mike's funeral took place at 11am Friday
at St Michaels Church with the internment at Brynithel cemetery
afterwards
1 September
2008:
Evening live
entertainment restarts on Saturday September 13th at the
Penndragon.
14th August 2008:
Despite successive promotions, Tillery are under
no illusions that Division Three East will be easy - far from
it. The Green & Whites know that the season ahead is going to be
a very hard battle indeed and the start given to them by the
fixture computer should prove that. First up are Pontypool
United away before yet another meeting with Tillery's greatest
league rivals in recent years, Gwernyfed, who of course were
promoted as Division Four East champions last year - at least
that game will be at home. The next trip is perhaps the most
eagerly awaited as Tillery make the very short journey up the
road to Central Park to face a Blaina side who are rumoured to
fancy themselves for promotion.
So a really tough trio of league games against
three cracking sides faces the Green & Whites and it should give
Tillery a good indication where they stand in the coming season.
Before that, Tillery play in the Caerleon Sevens on August Bank
Holiday Monday and have friendly encounters against near
neighbours Llanhilleth on Tuesday 26th and Taffs Well on
Saturday 30th both at the Park to get into gear
for the new season.
The long hot (not!) summer is nearly over and
we look forward to a hard but enjoyable season of higher
division rugby. So get along to the Park and support the Green &
Whites!
