What a bizarre game: a strangely subdued affair that never really got going with passive scrums from the off, punctuated throughout by the whistle, and almost as many cards as a birthday celebration in what was a niggly, but not dirty, game.

Tillery eventually won courtesy of a second half Luke Pegler try, but the Old Boys could easily have achieved a draw with several opportunities for a penalty kick right at the end which they eschewed in favour of going for the win. However, they failed to breakdown a stubborn home defence, for which the Green & Whites merited the win in the final analysis.

The game started with passive scrums, agreed in the days prior to the game with Tillery suffering a front row crisis following injuries to the likes of Dan Meredith and Luke Berry.

The visitors started the brighter of the two teams but neither could really generate any dominance with referee Carter’s whistle the overriding factor in the opening twenty minutes.

Tillery came off worse in that respect and eventually the Old Boys, having missed two penalty attempts, engineered space for prop Crowley to go over for a well-worked converted try after 25 minutes.

The Green & Whites reduced the deficit with a Haile penalty and then took the lead as Penn was worked free in a counterattack from the home line, bursting past the Old Boys’ full back on the outside to race over from 60 metres, Haile adding the extra points.

H-T: 10-7

The game remained a stop start affair after the break with the Newport hooker and Daniel Crandon becoming the first of five players to be shown a yellow card for what seemed largely innocuous offences.

Kyle Griffiths followed next in the bin, seemingly for not binding at a scrum, and the visitors took advantage of the extra man creating a gap for their hardworking No. 8 to crash over.

Despite being a man down, Tillery managed to regain the lead as Nicky Stevens ignited an attack with a string run and Aled Penn sucked in the Old Boys defence at a tapped penalty for Pegler to burrow through and over at a ruck.

With time ticking away and the Old Boys pressing for a score to draw level or take the lead, Greg Lane incurred the referee’s wrath to see yellow before Crandon and an Old Boys replacement forward were sent off for the briefest of dust-ups

The final moments were spent deep in the Tillery 22. Twice the Old Boys were awarded penalties that would levelled matters, but perhaps judging that a draw would only elicit an extra point over the bonus point they already held, they elected instead to keep the ball in play. However, Tillery were in no mood to relinquish the winning lead and several waves of Old Boys were repelled with ferocious tackling to secure the win.
