Three glorious tries in the opening 13 minutes secured this win for Tillery. To their credit, a spirited Croesyceiliog fought hard throughout with the boot of Matthew Entwhistle making the most of plentiful opportunities offered through the referee’s whistle, which kept the home side in touch for much of the game. But Tillery gained a fourth try and the first bonus point of the season just prior to the interval and a brace of tries by Nicky Stevens after the break ensured the final score was a fairer reflection of the afternoon’s balance of play.

The Green & Whites started in sparkling style. Within the first minute, Darren Miles, returning after injury, gathered a loose kick deep in his 22 and sent Nicky Stevens away. He fed Penn on the outside and the wing beat two men on the outside before finding Miles in support who galloped over, Haile adding the simple conversion.

The home response was immediate as the hardworking Zac Hadley barged his way over for an unconverted score from a tapped penalty. The breathless start continued as Miles once again launched an attack and Pegler did well to free Nicky Stevens who raced over in the corner.

Within minutes, Tillery had gained their third try, Greg Lane initiating another sweeping move with Pegler, Haile, and Miles combining to put Penn clear. The home side desperately needed some respite and Entwhistle slotted a huge penalty goal to make it 8-19.

The centre clearly had his kicking boots on and he was afforded two more successful opportunities from distance as it seemed that Tillery were somewhat harshly dealt with by the official at the breakdown.

With half time approaching, Tillery notched up a fourth try which had an element of luck as an up and under from Haile bounced wickedly to all but evade the Cockerels’ full back. He could only tip the ball to the chasing Aled Penn who scooped it on to Edwards and the centre raced clear and over for a try in the corner, excellently converted by Haile. Right on the stroke of half time, a Hadley charge set up a penalty for Entwhistle who landed his fourth goal.

Entwhistle slotted a fifth penalty almost immediately after the break as Tillery continued to be on the wrong side of the official’s interpretations and had Entwhistle’s successful streak continued the home side could incredibly have been level as he missed two long range kicks.

Despite that, Tillery were easily the superior side with ball in hand and this was highlighted as Kyle Griffiths was put through by Miles, the young No. 8 feeding Stevens for his second try. Still the penalties continued to be awarded against Tillery but they had far too much pace for the home side and Stevens gathered a hat trick as he was put clear again by Miles.

Moments later, the Green & Whites had a good shout for a penalty try as replacement wing Jason Thomas latched onto a skewed clearance kick only to be poleaxed right on the line by a defender in an offside position.

That seemed to trigger a late surge of bad blood between the sides in what had otherwise been a well-mannered if hard fought battle and a rather unsavoury free for all kicked off moments later as Miles was punched by an opponent.

Despite that, the referee perhaps wisely decided against the ultimate sanction for any player and the game petered out with the hosts gaining a late try to put a more respectable gloss on the final scoreboard.
