A deserved hat-trick of tries for No. 8 Kyle Griffiths ensured a third successive league win for Tillery. But they will be disappointed with an often ill-disciplined and scrappy display, failing to gain a bonus point against a game, callow Caerphilly side that remained in the contest until late on due to the home side’s errors.

The visitors showed up brightly in the opening minutes and a penalty goal by former Green & White, Hywel Jones was their just reward. A Jamie Davies run threatened the visitors’ line soon after, but his inside pass to Luke Pegler went astray. Nevertheless, Tillery took advantage of the good field position and Kyle Griffiths crashed over from close range for a 5-3 lead.

Tillery were enjoying the lion’s share of the game and Luke Pegler was held up just short, but it was Caerphilly who had the opportunity to regain the lead, Jones hooking his penalty attempt wide.

Daniel Crandon and the Caerphilly hooker locked horns off the ball midway through the half with the referee somewhat melodramatically ushering them off the field for a 10-minute rest. Tillery looked by far the better side and Penn, Nicky Stevens and Edwards linked up well but the centre was unable to finish the move.

As Crandon and his opponent retuned, Tillery found themselves reduced to 14 again as Griffiths was binned for illegally coming around at a ruck and Crandon was a little fortunate just before the interval as he body-checked a chip and chase, the penalty putting Caerphilly back into the lead.

From the restart Tillery regathered possession and Pegler might have scored in the corner but was again held up short. The visitors were offside in midfield though only for Haile to almost incredulously hit the upright with a penalty in front of the posts.

H-T 5-6

Caerphilly started the second half strongly and another Jones’ penalty extended their advantage. However, Tillery dominated thereafter with the pack in dominant form and Griffiths re-established the home lead with a second try from the back of the scrum, converted by Haile.

Haile added a penalty and Caerphilly were now spent as an attacking force though they hung in gamely within a score at 15-9. Tillery had several opportunities to gain a third try with Penn in particular causing havoc in the Cae’ ranks with some strong runs from an unfamiliar full-back position.

But too often the final pass in the backs went awry and it was Griffiths who added a third after he stole away on the blind side, Haile excellently converting.

With time slipping away for a fourth bonus point try, the hosts stormed back onto the offensive and they managed to cross the Cae’ line with the final move of the game, but Pegler was unable to ground the ball.
