Chris Stevens bagged a brace of tries as Tillery eased their way to a comfortable, if unspectacular, victory over Caerphilly to continue the 100% start to 2012 and complete the season’s double over the Castletown outfit. They will be disappointed not to have gained a bonus point, especially after establishing a dominant 20-point interval lead with tries by Stevens and Daniel Haile.

In truth, though, it was far from Tillery’s best performance of the season and, after the break in particular, they struggled to exhibit any real fluency or flow to their game on a sticky pitch as they also seemed to incur the displeasure of the referee. Credit though must also go to the dogged home side which battled hard to reduce the half time deficit without really ever threatening to make a real comeback.

A very late second try for Stevens gave the visitors hope of a fourth try and the extra point and there was a last ditch counterattack opportunity, but that faded along with the winter light at a gloomy Virginia Park.

A high tackle gave Daniel Haile the chance to open his team’s account with a penalty kick from close to the touchline just inside the Caerphilly half and the talented youngster duly obliged as he rifled the ball over from fully 50 metres. The home side also had the chance to benefit from a high tackle, but they elected to run the ball and Tillery cleared.

The opening exchanges were largely uninspired with neither side really looking like scoring. But there was some light relief for the Tillery-dominated crowd with a strong candidate for ‘best’ decision of the season when the home touch judge awarded Caerphilly a line out after their left wing placed his foot on the line to try and gain the throw after catching the ball well in field.

Tillery now enjoyed the lion’s share of possession and territory and after Haile added a second penalty, this one a more straightforward effort, they eventually got a try when Edwards’ well-timed flat pass put fellow centre Stevens through for a converted try.

With the last move of the half, the hosts attacked down the left flank but the attempted grubber through went straight into Haile’s midriff and he raced 60 metres to the line for a try he converted himself.

H-T: 0 – 20

A wonderfully weighted restart allowed the home open side flanker to gather cleanly and set up an early attack during which Tillery strayed offside in midfield for the hosts to garner their first points through a penalty.

That seemed to inspire them and they edged the first period of the half but without creating any real chances. Then just as Tillery seemed to regain their early dominance, Caerphilly got a try as they broke well to engineer space for their outside half to cross for a well-taken try that narrowed the lead to 12 points. Despite that, they never really looked like threatening the Tillery lead and the half’s main action came as the referee responded with four yellow cards after a brief fracas, Dafydd Jones and Kyle Griffiths being the recipients for Tillery.

With thirteen men apiece, the field opened up and Miles, Penn and Stevens began to find spaces. But each time Tillery gained good field position they were thwarted by a combination of determined defence and the official’s whistle.  With injury time approaching, they at last broke through when Chris Stevens went over for his second try following nice play by Haile.

The restart signalled the final play of the game and Tillery nearly managed to gain the fourth try as Penn was sent away and clear by David Rossiter but was unable to escape the clutches of the covering defenders.
