A converted pushover try 15 minutes from time gave Tillery a richly deserved first win of the season, and their first ever triumph in league competition against Abergavenny.

The Green and Whites ruled possession and territory throughout, but were thwarted on the scoreboard by a lack of a real cutting edge in attack on occasion and frustratingly by the visitors’ cynical approach in defence. Ironically in light of their rather negative approach, Abergavenny looked dangerous behind when they got the ball and they took both their try-scoring chances to establish a 14 -3 lead. But the pack’s dominance ensured that Tillery ran out winners.

Once again Tillery conceded an early try as Luke Pegler was snagged at a base of a scrum on the 22 and the loose ball was hacked through for the visitors’ left wing to gather and cross for a try that was excellently converted. The home side had an immediate opportunity to reduce the deficit but Haile’s excellently struck long range penalty effort hit the bar. However the youngster made no mistake shortly after as the visitors conceded seven penalties at breakdowns in the opening quarter hour.

Eventually, the referee’s patience snapped and he rightly dispatched the Claret and Ambers’ blindside flanker to the bin. Tillery though were unable to take advantage and instead the visitors stretched their lead when, despite being under severe pressure at an attacking scrum, they managed to retain possession and pierce the home defence for a second converted try.

The rest of the half belonged to Tillery although they failed to create any clear try scoring chances and their only reward was a second Haile penalty right on the stroke of half time.

H-T: 6-14

The second half was greeted by a heavy cloudburst, continued Tillery pressure and further ‘Gavenny indiscretions as Tillery endeavoured to win quick ball at the ruck and maul. Haile missed an early penalty and had to be replaced shortly afterwards by Chris Stevens having suffered an injury.

Stevens’ impact was immediate as he set up a Tillery attack and slotted a penalty kick to get his team within a single score. Play continued to be played in the Abergavenny half but Tillery struggled to get further points as the visitors’ defence became increasingly cynical. Again the official was forced to act with a further yellow card before confusion reigned as the ‘Gavenny loose-head prop appeared to voluntarily walk off the field after being penalised.

Eventually ‘Gavenny continued with a full complement and Tillery at last took a deserved lead as Kyle Griffiths finished off a pushover try that was excellently converted by Stevens from very wide out.

With five minutes remaining the visitors managed to gain a foothold in Tillery territory for the first time since the break and it took determined disciplined defence by the Green & Whites to protect their lead and run down the clock for a well-merited victory.
