Division Three East

Whilst Tillery shipped forty points for a second successive week, some defensive lapses aside, this was a much improved overall performance from the disappointing defeat at Abergavenny against a powerful Pill Harriers outfit. Hampered by the loss of influential captain Luke Pegler in the very first tackle of the game, the Green & Whites were highly committed throughout and replacement Ross Paul’s late try gave them faint hope of a bonus point before a last play score by the visitors extinguished that.

From the kick off, Pill charged up field, Luke Pegler’s excellent tackle costing him when, after several minutes’ treatment, he was forced to retire with a wrist injury.

Early play was scrappy with the visitors enjoying the bulk of position and possession, good tackles by Darren Miles and debutant Ashley Bayliss keeping the Tillery line intact.

A silly punch allowed Tillery to gain their first real attacking position with a penalty midway through the half. Ironically though it led to a Pill score as the ball was lost in the visitors’ 22 and a quick tapped penalty resulted in left wing Joe Ross just about sneaking in at the corner for a try excellently converted by Rowlands.

The Green & Whites then conceded a very soft try when Pill No. 8 Gibson was left unattended at a line-out, gathering a long throw to crash over.

Tillery fought back strongly as Jamie Davies slotted over a penalty for his first league points for the club, courtesy of the post, and then repeated the act as Tillery threatened a try just before the interval.

H-T 6-12

The visiting pack upped their efforts immediately after the break causing some home discomfort at early scrums. Lewis Elliot playing in an unaccustomed position at No. 8 twice did well to clean up but was powerless to do anything when from a scrum, Pill opposite number Gibson picked up and fed Rowlands with a neat flick for an excellent try the full back himself converted superbly.

Tillery were the architects of their own downfall for another Pill try shortly afterwards as they lost the ball in the middle of the field, Gibson powering over from long range.

The home side refused to lie down though and enjoyed their best spell of the game scoring a great teamwork try through the impressive Greg Lane. Darren Miles sparked a counterattack with a mazy run before excellent work by Elliot and Bayliss carried on the move for Lane to go over for a converted score.

The game became an entertaining spectacle and Pill scrum half Burrows, now in the centre, scythed his way through only to be denied superbly by Miles. The visitors were not to be denied though moments later as Ross gathered his second finishing off a fantastic passage of play.

In courageous fashion, Tillery returned to the attack and some nice interplay set up a tapped penalty, Ross Paul burrowing over for a try converted by Davies.

With time running out, Tillery tried a desperate counterattack in search of a bonus point score. The ball again went loose though and was hacked through when it appeared to be knocked on. The referee was unsighted though and play continued for Wilkinson to score a try converted by Rowlands with the last kick of the game.
